The tree trimmers came down our road cutting everything that came close to the electric wires. when they finished they left some Hackberry logs behind. I picked this one up and found some beautiful feather in the wood. This first turn (rough) before boiling is about 14" X 4".:)

Another lovely piece of wood. I'll bet this one really pops with the finish.

Aww, technicalities. If they've got some good wood in their possession, they deserve it! :D:rolleyes::D

Looks like you scored good with this wood! Nice bowl! Should be real pretty once finished!

You did indeed score a nice one here. Wish we had more hardwood here in Washington.

That is really nice. I wish the tree trimmers around here would do that. They cut 18" diameter branches off the walnut trees lining the road but took them all with them. All I saw when I got home from work was the cut marks on the trees. :(

Jim,
Boiling is taking the rough turned blank (left to 10% thickness as 10 inch bowl left 1 inch thick) then boiling it in water. Place in pot, bring to boil, boil for 1 hour per inch of thickness, allow to come back to room temp in the water, then seal and let it dry. It relaxes the wood fiber and a few other things so that there is almost no tension left in the wood as it dries. Less warpage and cracking. Too much trouble for me though. I love warped bowls.

Nice pickup Chris. Really nice looking wood and should shine when finished.

Jim, It is a good question as many do not fully understand the benifits available through boiling. visit this link on Steve's site and follow the links he gives. http://www.woodturningvideosplus.com/educational-content-search.html?cx=partner-pub-1708776013878739%3Ar1al2ycczr0&cof=FORID%3A9&ie=ISO-8859-1&q=boiling+protocol&sa=Search#882 If you have any further questions PM me,:)
