View Full Version : Thought, ideas?

This was supposed to be a cheap knockoff of a Keetonesque bowl. The bowl is ambrosia maple, and the lid is walnut. It measures 51/2" tall w/lid, and 5" D. There is no finish at all on it.
Questions;
Is the knob too high for this lid. My wife thinks so, but if I cut it off by about 3 grooves, I'm thinking it will look too mammaryesk.

Should the lid dia. be the same as the bowl top dia?

Should the lid be redesigned altogether?

Should I pitch the lid?

Should I pitch the lid, and bowl:(

Sorry for all the questions, but being design challenged, I value the opinions from this forum.176070176071176072

Ray, I am honored!:o I like the bowl, and it is a beautiful piece of wood. If I were doing it, I would prefer a nearly flat lid with a small round knob, flush with the outside of the bowl, and thinner than what you have. But, that is just my taste. I will be interested to hear the thoughts of others!

Agree as well. I don't think the mushroom dome works well here. Nice wood on your bowl. I'd make the lid from either the same material as the bowl, or from a contrasting wood. The two woods there are just too similar in coloration for my tastes, though I do realize you have no finish on them yet.

Good Luck

Clint

It's pretty wood, and there's nothing wrong with what you've got there. If you're just fishing for ideas, I'll weigh in... I'm not sure a flush lid(same diameter) will really matter because of the rounded lip of the main form. I like the idea of a thinner lid with just a hint of convexity. If you want something really funky, you could go with a concave lid that extends beyond the sides. I like the beaded knob, but I think making it taper/curve from top to bottom might add some visual interest.

BTW, what wrong with 'mammeryesk'? It thought imitating natural shapes was part of good form!

I'm going to go a different direction than everyone else, why not make a lid that continues the upper curve into a symetrical "gourd" type shape topped with either a small spherical knob or a small hand carved knob. I'd try a contrasting wood like the walnut you have with that lid, and make the knob out of the ambrosia maple. (if you have any more of it) I think it might be pleasing to the eye, and tie everything together nice and tidy. I really like the form of the bowl, and it is spectacular looking ambrosia maple.

Thanks all, I reshaped the lid, but too late to take pics tonight. I think it looks much better. I'll reshoot it tomorrow.
