the motor is 2hp, 60 Hz, 230 volt only, but the manual doesn't give the amp rating. I need to install the 230 volt breaker, but don't know the amp rating of the motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know, breaker size depends on wire size, not motor H.P. Generally 14 ga. wire-15 amp 12 ga. wire 20 amps. 10 ga. wire 30 amps. Does the manual call out a breaker size? Conventional wisdom is that the breaker protects the wire and outlets from overload, the motor has its own built-in protection. Manufacturer's data or local requirements would override conventional wisdom. There are also exceptions for dedicated motor circuits in NEC, it seems those exceptions allow for a larger breaker on a given wire size. Disclaimer-I'm not an electrician and I didn't stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

Based on 220 volts and 2 HP, I would say it needs a 20 amp breaker.

If this is an induction motor with a nameplate rating of 2 hp, the NEC give a maximum full load current of 12 A (for a 230 V motor). So a 20 A circuit should be fine, as already stated.
