Congrats on the wood! After sitting for 20+ years - that is going to be some tough wood to turn! Looking forward to seeing some of the calls!

That's a great find and a nice looking call. The log looks a little different from an ironwood log I had a year or so ago... I'm used to seeing a prominent sapwood ring around the outside of the log. I hope you've got a new bandsaw blade, and I hope you'll post some photos when you cut it up. Wood doesn't get much prettier than desert ironwood.

Rick, that's a very nice looking log. It looks like it didn't crack very much....He might have had it for over 20 years, but I'll bet it was dead at least 20 years before he aquired it. That's why there isn't any sapwood on it. The calls are beautiful..... Jerry (in Tucson)

You've got a winning lottery ticket right there! I've been drooling over desert ironwood blanks online for a long time, but haven't found a customer that would pay enough for a duck call made from it to even cover my costs, let alone make a profit. Really looking forward to seeing what you turn from it. In my opinion it is the most beautiful wood in the world.

I'll bet that "arnwood" is some hard stuff. Better keep your sharpening stuff handy! I had a guy bring one of those in once asking me to cut it into knife scales for him. I said I would do it for a chunk of the log. Must have gone through a half dozen band saw blades before I was done!

Beautiful wood and a very nice call! The little burls will be fun and beautiful too! Did you get and elk? I need to get out on another one, as it has been about 10 years since my last Elk hunt. They are lots of work but worth the beauty of the country and time spent with good people!

Great haul and have a Happy New Year,

Jeff
