I am just getting into turning and I am interested in finding a few sites like Wood Whisperer but focused on wood turning instead.

Any thoughts / ideas for the best online video sources out there for wood turning? I am ok with a subscription based service if it's worthwhile.

Thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I think you've hit on perhaps the most active wood turning site on the internet right here at SMC. Youtube seems to be a good resource for short videos. Our own Bob Hamilton has a bunch of excellent wood turning videos on his youtube page... I would encourage you to look those up. There are several online forums for woodworking and most include a turner's section, but I don't know of any that are as active as this site. Good luck on your foray into turning, and let us know if you find any other good resources in your search.

Mauricio,

Go to www.youtube.com (http://www.youtube.com) and do a search on Robert Sorby turning tools. One of the videos you will find interesting is turning a goblet. It will teach you turning tool techniques and the mechanical considerations to take as you turn a goblet. These same considerations can be used on other projects as well.

Here's a website that has some very useful information though not videos: http://www.peter.hemsley.btinternet.co.uk/CDB/Technical/Beginners/beginners.html

Here's a video site. Scroll over to AAW on the screen and there's quite a collection of videos: http://www.woodworkingchannel.com/dolphin/vidego_video_library.php

Here's a website that is pretty good and if you scroll down to the bottom of the page there are some pretty well done videos of basic techniques: http://www.turningtools.co.uk/

Here's a site with some well documented projects: http://www.turnedtreasures.com/index.html

Here's another site with a lot of information: http://www.woodturningonline.com/Turning/Turning_articles.html#beginner

Here's a site that is one of the coolest I have found. These are all old books about woodworking and in the index is some about turning. This is a tremendous resource IMHO. http://www.evenfallstudios.com/woodworks_library/woodworks_library.html

I've got more and I'll post them later if you are interested.

It's pretty much a guarantee that at the least, you will be doing "less" of other woodwork. Welcome to the VORTEX, Mauricio!

Ken/Steve - I just went through all your links and there is some impressive stuff... I even watched a quick video on making a mushroom box which is probably easy stuff for a lot of folks but really got me jazzed about a potential early project to learn via trial and error at a very low cost!

In the process of looking at the links, I quickly realized that a lot of what was posted is woodworking resources in general which was fantastic. I'd love to see more links - send anything you like and if you want, I can post a final post on the woodworking forum with all the links after...

In the interest of sharing, I stumbled across Tommy Mac's video site. Some people like him and others hate him but regardless, I think he is a very talented individual. The Bombe Secretary he built a while back is unreal and he has about 50 hours of video chronicling the entire build. In addition, he has a lot of other videos on projects he previously created as well as short cuts from his new TV show. The media page is hard to find - I still don't know exactly how to get to it from the main pages. Here is the link:

Thanks again for the woodworking information. Really cool stuff!

Mo,

It was said earlier, but this site is a great source for learning. I appreciate things like the links Ken posted for us, videos and other perspectives help, but you will find simple Q&As, comments & critiques, and general camaraderie at SMC proves to be invaluable in one's learning curve.

Stick around, its fun. You do find yourself doing less flatwork, but the good news is .... I have found that the wood I use for turning generally doesnt cost anything ... HA
