View Full Version : DIY mobile base for drill press?

I got a set of casters (two fixed, two swivel) with the intent of constructing a relatively cheap mobile base for a 15" floor standing drill press. Has anyone come up with a slick method of rasing and lowering the wheels that's relatively easy to construct?

I have one of the Craftsman adjustable mobile bases that came with my table saw, but I'm not sure that is the best design for my application. I was wondering if it might be done with some sort of frame hinged in the middle. I'll attempt to illustrate with text. Imagine this is a side view of the base:

-W--P----H----P--W-

W = wheel
P = pivot point, somehow attached to the top of the existing drill press base
H = hinge point, lowering the hinge point would raise the wheels and lower the existing base to rest solidly on the floor.

Does this seem reasonable, or has someone already conquered this? (And for less than the cost of a prefab base, of course.;) )
