I need some advise. I recently saw on Mike Mahoney's dvd, he was turning on a Vicmarc VL300. He had a seperate speed controller with a stop button. Without having the DVR-XP, is there any way I can get a controller like this as an aftermarket item. I would like the option of having true variable speed without having to change belt speeds. Does any item out there exist?? It would be nice if I could plug my lathe in to a item like this and plug the controller in to the wall.
Thank you all.

I just spoke with Ernie Conover. He explained to me about the different cycles of an induction motor like I have. Apparently you can only use a controller on a three phase motor which I would have to buy seperately. Very confusing to a non-electrical guy like me..... Guess it is not worth buying a new motor and controller.

Controlling a single-phase motor is possible, you just have to find the correct controller. Your best bet is to find an H-bridge inverter. Remove the starting cap on the motor and you can get bi-directional control.

This subject has been discussed on SMC several time, I believe. Here's one thread: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?127454-Motor-upgrade-for-lathe

try this link and see if it can be of use to you
since jet and powermatic are one in the same for the most part this might work for you. i made a couple changes to mine and would do a couple other things differently but it works well as it is
