View Full Version : How many routers do you own?

Chris Padilla

This should be interesting. I have 3 right now. Include those for your router table, laminate trimmers, plunge. Heck, if your Rotozip qualifies in your mind, count it! Maybe even the Dremel if you use it as a mini-router.

I have a Rotozip and a Dremel but I don't use them as a router...more or less.

:)

Not counting mini's --trims--or Dremels. I have 6 Routers that I use. I am very lazy and there are four router bits that I use alot so that only leaves two for the rest.

I have 6, including a Craftsman (rebadged Ryobi) that I haven't touched for the last 5 years and a PC lam. trimmer. I have a Dremel and a router base but I'm so ashamed to admit owning the base (even though I paid only $5 for it) so I don't count it in.

But how do you count router motor with multiple bases? For my 690 motor, I have a fixed base in a backup router table, a fixed base for various jig, and a D-handle base.

Chris, you missed one important number, that is zero. Why? Zero is how many routers I own right now.

I gave away my old Craftsman router about 3 months ago and am waiting for the availability of the Festool 1400.

Too many if you ask my wife:

Porter Cable 690 Plunge and Fixed Base Combo
Porter Cable 690 90th Anniversary
Porter Cable 690 D-Handle
DeWalt 615 Plunge
Bosch Laminate Trimmer
Rotozip if the counts (although is works great for what it does)
Dremel (I love that thing)
Delta 3hp Shaper (Does that count)

Love the all and they all excel at a particular task.

Lets see...

An old Crafsman is dedicated to my Beale wood threader.
Two Bosch 1.75 hp for general purpose routing.
One Bosch 1611 for table work.
One Dewalt DW616 with plunge base that I use for Corian.
An old Black and Decker trimmer for small round over work.
A new PC 7518 for the ShopBot
Total = 7

I voted 3. Didn't count my Dremel, even though I have the router base for it, since I have only used it for cutting holes in drywall.
I also didn't count the OF1400 I'll buy next month.

Currently I own "only" one router - Festool OF 1010. Although some more routers (Festool and Scheer) are on my never-ending list I don't think I'll buy another one soon.

I replied to the poll as having 9 routers, but if I count my two dremels, my cut out tool, (Which is classified as a router.) and two 1/4" air router, then count my two 11 amp multi base routers (3 bases for each of the two.) as each base being a different router! Wow! I could like say I had like wow! 18 routers:eek: But I don't, so I have just 9 routers:( What the hay! I have 14 routers.:D I just convinced myself that they all count except the extra bases.:p

List!
Porter Cable

890
7518
690 3 bases
7499 cut out

Dewalt

610 2 each
625
621
616 3 bases

I've got two big PCs in tables, a Hitachi M12V in a table, Dewalt 621 for freehand, 1.5 hp PC for dovetails, and a Bosch 1517EVS for chair seat scooping. These I use regularly. I also have the first plunger I ever bought (1986?), a big, bulky Black and Decker that hasn't been used in years. And of course, I still have the dead Makita 3612BR that I use as a doorstop...and as a reminder not to throw power tools. :(

So I have either six or eight, depending on how you count. And a Dremel.

And I'm very happy with it. I have only one router, and I only own straight bits. Mostly the gamut of spiral up and down cuts, and a rabetting set.

I have three as well...loooking to get a fourth this year...probably a Hitatchi for the table.

Kurt Aebi
01-07-2005, 8:36 AM
I have (3) ,(1) old fixed base that spends most of its' time in the router table, and (2) plunge style where (1) is a 3hp variable speed and (1) a 1hp single speed. I usually end up using the smaller routers for most of what I do, unless it is some real special project or tough wood. I often have the routers setup with different bits required for the project, so I don't have to keep changing bits or redoing the setup for each piece.

I feel that you can't have "too many" routers, as long as you can afford them. I too have a Roto-Zip and a couple of Dremels and have only used th e dremels for a router when I was helping my dad build doll houses for his grandaughters (my nieces) where very small fine details were required.

Herb Kelley
01-07-2005, 9:21 AM
PC 7518
DW 621
PC 690
2 - M12V
2 - PC trim routers
2 - Older model Craftsman
Two installed in router tables
One table top yet to be placed into service.
If you let me count the trim routers and Craftsman, total nine.

In the WAH shop, there are 7 total routers (actually 8 but I can't really count my very old craftsmen that doesn't work so well).

In practice, there were only two that got a lot of use. The PC in the router table, and the hand held PC plunge router.

Recently though, I have been using the trim router more and more as it just seems to fit the hand better and many tasks bettter. It is small, yet powerful so it does a great job with the 1/4" shank router bits. I am finding that when I have any small routing jobs to do, I grab for the trim router first, then the larger plunge router if it isn't up to snuff.

I should also mention that the CNC router project has had three different routers in it over the past 2 years. The most recent change there was to an older Bosch router that had a broken spindle lock which was useless as a "worker" router. So, I put a quick change router extension in it with a "modified" wrench to lock the spindle and it now rides in the CNC router.

So, while we have 7 or 8 routers, only 3 get regular use and 4 if you count the CNC router.

I can't say I have a favorite of any of them, they all do what they are suppose to which keeps me busy filming projects.

My vote is 3. My first is a B&D that was a freebie from an installation contest back in the late 80's (and worth every penny paid ;-0) I have a PC 7518 for my future router table, and an PC 8529 for hand held work. Haven't had a bit in either of them yet....but couldn't pass up the good prices I found them at. Got to get this shop rehab done!!!! Jim.

Hitachi M12V for the router table and a Bosch 1617EVSPK for hand held work. The Bosch is terrific and the Hitachi is pretty good too.

As of yesterday 2. I just bought a new Makita RF1101 kit which included the plunge base and edge guide. I previously had an old Black & Decker plunge cut which my dad bought about 15 years ago. I also have a small rotary tool similar to a dremmel but it's a Mastercraft brand which is the brand name of tools sold by Canadian Tire stores up here in Canada.

KC
Wow, must have been a big router mis-cut.
I have thrown wood before, and dropped/thrown my share of hand tools but not any power tools.
Plus I can hardly move my tablesaw and bandsaw :)

But that is a nice reminder!:D

I have 7 routers and use them all as I find tasks that each are best at or that I designate it's use for. I could still use a trim router and another fixed base router and need to dedicate a plunge to my mortise/tenon jig.
PC 7518 (2) - one in table and one for heavy duty hand held use with large bits
PC 7529 - a real favorite of mine - gets used the most as I love the micro adjust
DW 610 - great small router that takes tremendous abuse
DW 621 - super smooth plunge
DW 625 - sees use with larger bits
DW 618? D-handle - just starting to get used to this one

I was really feeling quilty about having so many routers but with some of you having 10 or more, I need to increase my collection :) .

Well I voted six. Two PC 690s with a number of different bases for production work I used to do, one DeWalt 621 given to me by the DeWalt guys for hosting a focus group in my shop, one giant PC (7538 or something like that) in the Legacy, one PC laminate trimmer, and I counted the shaper in the Mini Max because I have a router spindle for it.

I do not count the Dremel or the Rotozip.

Lol. One for each router bit.:eek:
I'd have to refinance the farm if I had a router for each bit. Never counted my bits, but probably close to 75-100.
I could see it now, me ordering another 75 routers from porter cable, and a porter cable semi driving up my driveway, and the wife spot it first.:eek:

Isn't it interesting that the graph began to take on the characteristics of a bell-shaped curve; with 3 being the value around which it was centered. All of you guys at 10 or more created a secondary spike. This probably represents the influence of the professional users as opposed to us hobbiests.

Greg,

Yep, statistics can be very cool. However, if I had spread out the 10+, it would continue to drop off to zero eventually.

Frank,

Yep, didn't think about that but oh well. :o I couldn't put in 11, 12, 13, 14...and so on either! :)
