I got a set of JJ 1/2" hollowing tools for Christmas. I needed to make a handle for them. This is what I came up with.

Old inboard boat drive shaft
175308
Brass Drive shaft reborn :)

The beginning of a hollowing love affair :D

Mike, with that short of tang on the copper clamp I would be concerned about the handle splitting. If it were me I would go back to the handle and turn tenon right behind the copper-clamp/handle interface and fit a tight brass or copper ferule to reinforce the wood/tang area.

James I thought of that also. The tang is 2" and the wood is 1 1/2". I think it will be OK. The commercially available Hoaluk (http://www.packardwoodworks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=packard&Product_Code=105404&Category_Code=) does not use a ferule.

Mike I don't mean to be contrary, just very safety conscious.
I believe if you check the Packard web site again you will find that the Hosaluk inserts http://www.packardwoodworks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=packard&Category_Code=tools-hos-inser are used in the Hosaluk handles http://www.packardwoodworks.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=packard&Category_Code=tools-hos-hand which are aluminum and of course aluminum would not need a ferrule.

James you have to read the description.
This was taken from the first sentence of the packard advertisment. "Now you can make wooden tool handles"

I saw that but I still think a ferrule would be a good idea. I'm thinking the advertising was considering their line of Beech wooden handles which do have ferrules but good luck, I hope it works without splitting the wood. I know some of the catches I have had would sure put some major forces on plain wood.

Wow, the tool handle is a work of art by itself!

That's cool... The brass work is super nice. None of my turning tools look that classy.
