Just recently got a new Grizzly G0698, got it all set up with no problems and grabbed a piece of wood that I thought was scrap. Due to size and shape of the wood I ended up with a cup. I'm happy. :)

Nice cup and congrats on the lathe.

I think there's been quite a change in how the Grizzly wood lathes are being viewed in the last two years. When I first joined SMC there was nothing but bad-mouthing for the lathes, though many liked the other Grizzly tools.

Thom,
I have to agree that they have had some less than great machines. I only personally have one other grizzly tool and that is one of the vertical belt sanders and I have had that for almost 20 years. For me that sander is one of the best buys I ever did. I also know a fellow who had one Grizzly's other lathes and I was not at all impressed, he seemed happy with it though. I believe that every company has had at least a few tools that were pretty much junk. So far the new lathe is good, the fit and finish are good, time will tell how the motor and electronics hold up.

David,

I went back an looked at the picture you posted of your "cup" which you have nicely displayed on the ways of your new G0698. I think this photograph shows the substantial heft of the G0698, as one can see the thickness and the width of the bed here. I know, when I upgraded because of my craftsman lathe breaking a part and could not find a replacement, that I was impressed then with the substantial bulk of the ways, and the good machining.

I believe you are in for many years of great turning experience here with this unit!
