Microsoft's new AntiSpyware Beta1

.... Just installed Microsoft's new AntiSpyware beta1 software and it seems to be doing the job just fine. I was aware I had two spy programs operating in the background from time to time. They couldn't get out because of the firewall, the new software got them, and placed an additional two lesser threats in quarantine. Appears to be a neat piece of software, system feels better and runs smoother. Of course, like everything else, time will tell. After the new software ran, I followed it up with Norton's System Works to clean up any tidbits, then ran a registry cleaner.

.... If I had to rate this piece of software I'd give it an A+ ;).

Boyd,

What do you use to clean the registry?

Thanks,

Bill

I use a program from http://www.tweaknow.com/RegCleaner.html

Be very careful when it asks if you want to delete an orphaned entry. It might not be and will cause the parent application to not run correctly.

Hi Bill,

.... I use a small program called TweakNow RegCleaner it's a FREE for NON COMMERCIAL USE and does an excellent job. This is how I use it. After I adjust, redo my system, defragment and compress the registry, and run scandisk, then I run TweakNow RegCleaner, it's like removing the bodies after the war is over kinda thing, gets rid of all the debris. You can download it from Download.com at http://www.download.com/3000-2094-10262639.html (http://www.download.com/3000-2094-10262639.html) You can also go to the home site which is HTTP://www.Tweaknow.com (http://www.tweaknow.com/) but they want you to jump through all the hoops in hopes you'll buy something.

Good luck on your choice and hope this helped ;).

Update Definition Version #5678

.... Just received the automatic update, Definition Version #5678, from Microsoft for their new AntiSpyware Beta1 (above post). Didn't hear it coming in until the pop up informed me, when it was complete. Not like other noisy updates, as the hard drive has rattled away in the past.

..... Slick ;).

I installed the beta version and it caught one piece of adware/spyware - a popup messenger for a product we have installed. I did shut off the automatic update and have it set to "notify" mode. That's because I have separate ids on our PC and specifically log on to an idea with restricted priviledges for normal surfing. That id doesn't have admin rights to the PC and can't install software, so I just switch to the admin id when I need to update virus rules and th elike.

Before you install this, you may want to check out the Spybot forums:
http://forums.net-integration.net/index (http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=26915)

there are a couple of topics concerning this.

I installed it this morning. It found and removed a hijack that had been evading my other attempts over the last few days. So, I'm happy with it so far.

I loaded it at work and at home. At work, it found 10 items on the first run. And this is behind a pretty restrictive (or so I thought) firewall. At home it found ZERO (Norton IS & AV). Both computers (work and home) are running Spybot and Adaware.

Follow the links and read down a little farther about what is actually reported. Or, if you are more comfortable, follow the hack instructions and edit with REGEDIT.

I am happy with it so far.

Well here's an extra twist on the MS AntiSpyware. I decided to download and install it a couple of nights ago. I let it do the complete default install then had it do a full system check. I came up clean which didn't surprise me as this is on a laptop I bought after Xmas. At the time there was a big rebate on the McAfee Security suite when purchased with a new PC so I picked that up as well. It was pretty common to see 7-8 suspicious events show up on the McAfee personal firewall log every day. McAfee's software has a tie in to automatically report suspicious events to hackerwatch.org which is kind of nice. So tonight I'm looking at the firewall log and notice there's nothing showing up since I installed the AntiSpyware. That just didn't look right based on what had typically been showing up so I started poking around. One of the McAfee things you can do is have hackerwatch.org run a vulnerability probe to your internet connection, so I launched it. What hackerwatch reported back was pretty interesting (see pic). So I fired up AntiSpyware and poked around. Sure enough, one of the agents it had installed was a proxy server.

Stuff isn't even reaching the mcAfee firewall now. Just FYI
