Tim, thanks for that link! It was perfect, I had that issue this weekend and was searching for commercially available fixes (the 'spend money' reflex) and I think for my small projects, I will build an option or two.

I've found that 4 bolts are adequate. I went overboard when I built mine and put 8 bolts on it! I now only use 4 of the 8.

Here's another version to throw into the mix: http://azwoodturners.org/DoughnutChuck.pdf

I use 3 bolts of varying length to secure the bowl to the chuck. Be aware that as you tighten each bolt, it will pull the center of the bowl towards that particular bolt. So keep your tailstock in place and be sure to tighten the bolts in small steps - just like you were torquing an engine head.

I made the one Steve has refered to. I use 4 bolts on the big one I made and the donuts start at 4" up to 15". The small one uses for 3 bolts and the donuts go from 3" to 10". Keep your tailstock in place or if you reverse the bowl with the chuck still in place on the bowl don't remove the chuck till you have the donut chuck tightened down.

I posted my donut chuck and some thoughts a couple of months ago here: http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?152349-Donut-or-Straka-Chuck&highlight=

I am planning to build a donut chuck about 19.5" D to fully utilize the 20" D of my Powermatic 3520, but it is still out there. One concern is making the different plates to go with the 19.5" D but with various ID' and bolt circles to better hold the bowls or forms. Good luck on yours.
