Finished just in time for Christmas! This is the schoolbox project from "The Jointer and Cabinet Maker" - Chris S. and Joel (TFWW). Great book. The history section is very good, the original text is fun, and the build instructions are very complete. Buy the book!
I built this box from cherry and ash because that is what i had around. This is my first "real" handcut DT project. I have practiced quite a bit. I used a bandsaw and circular saw to cut rough boards but the rest was done by hand.
The initials in the lid are for my wife. They look best from a foot or two away. :)
Next project - the chest of drawers from the book. Already started planning panels for the case.

That's excellent, Bob! I don't have a copy of The Joiner & Cabinetmaker, but I've been drooling over The Schwarz's article on this project in Woodworking Magazine. The proportions are just beautiful. I'll echo Jim's remarks on the initials: great way to personalize a project. Be sure to document your chest of drawers build -- that's another project that keeps drawing my eye. We can all live vicariously through you. :)

What a great looking box! Love the initials. Looks like you did a great job carving them to me. I think they help to make the piece look like an antique. Great job!

Thanks for the kind words. I will definately post pics of the chest when complete. I suspect that will be in 6 to 12 months. I work real slow. :)

Great job Bob. IIRC the book said to not skip the packing crate. Did you do that one :-)

That's nice! I've been wanting to do something similar to replace my plastic cooler lunch box. I hope mine comes out as nice as yours.

Yeah, I skipped the packing box. This was not my first hand tool project, so I figured my other projects counted for that. It would be a good project allthe same.

That book was one of my favorite reads of 2010. Great job on the box!
