This is a piece of Hickory from my woods. I ended up using dewaxed shellac to fill the grain. It developed several small cracks that I applied thin CA to but nothing major.

When you say filled the grain what do you mean? Is hickory open grained like oak.

Matt, from what I have seen with this particuliar wood, it likes to crack where the sap wood and heart wood meet. The grain isnt to open however, but with adding the CA I wanted to seal things up before I moved forward. Maybe I should have worded my OP different.

I will just add some more turnings in this thread.

Here is another bowl made from my Spalted Maple. It was hard waiting for it to spalt but worth it I think.

My youngest son wanted to turn a few stoppers to give away for Christmas presents.

He did pretty good. They are all test fitted and ready for finishes

That is some beautiful wood. The colors give it a lot of contrast. It is a shame that the bottom will be hidden from view, but it will be a very pleasant surprise for those who turn it over!

Very nice work on both bowls - really pretty Hickory and the spalting was worth the wait!

Be sure to let your son know that he did a great job on the stoppers - especially the Cherry one! Really like the form! Also like the finish on all of them!
