This is another of Steve Goods scrollsaw patterns that has been adapted to the laser. I made this box with his pattern, which just has butt joints. Gluing it up with Weldon #3 made a pretty nice item. I have since made one similar to this out of walnut using the finger box joints. It is 3/16 Ivory cast acrylic. You can get this pattern from Steve Goods site if you want it. It's in PDF format.

Larry, great gift idea! Nicely done, I like the ivory color. I think this would make a popular tissue box design for the holidays, when people have lots of company and lots of colds! There are lots of box covers for the cube shaped boxes but hardly any for the more common brick shape.

cheers, dee

Yes Dee, it would make a dandy tissue box.Thought about that. Not sure about the size opposed to the tissue box but it can be resized easily.

William:
Its too large to post, it exceeds our limit. However, I think it is OK to post the link to his site. scrollsawworkshop.blogspot.com You can find it in the free patterns catalog. I think every thing he has ever sent out as a free pattern is in that catalog. I think he said about 600 designs.

I see the link was edited, but, when you go there, it's on Page 3

Yep, I get his emails that he sends out with some great patterns. My only issue is cutting the thicknesses necessary to produce it. If I can only laser 1/8", then 3/16 may or may not work without burning / discoloration. I guess multiple passes or double thicknesses work as well.

Terry,
Why can't you cut 3/16" ? My 40 watt cuts it no problem. You can make it out of 1/8" though, might be a little flimsy.

The pattern is dated Oct, 29 2010. Thank you for the information.

Yeah, Terry, why can't you cut 3/16"? My 35w cut 1/4" no problem, although of course it's slow (4 speed).

Dee / All,

I was told my ULS 35W could only cut thru 1/8". I have to cut 100 power / 4-5 speed as it is now for 1/8" baltic birch or acrylic (more like 2-3 speed) to cut successfully on one pass. I'd love to cut thicker as that is what is most readily available at the home stores. I just have never tried thicker due to initial training. Maybe a little out of focus (closer or father away ?) may help too. I remember seeing some comments about doing stuff out of focus to achieve different results.

Terry,
I am just going off Epilog's recommended settings for a 30-35 watt machine. I realize your machine is a Universal, but it should be similar. They recommend 12s/100p for 1/8" acrylic and 4s/100p for 1/4". Since 3/16" is in between you should be able to cut it at about 6-7s/100p. My 40watt will cut that 3/16 at 8s/100p and I use 5000 frequency. You may need to check your alignment or something. I don't think multiple passes should be required. I don't do anything out of ordinary for focus.
