I bought half a cherry log last year for $25. While I was there I notice some cherry crotches. I asked the sawyer how much he wanted for one and he said " Oh how about ten bucks. I found one with equal size branches and bought it. This one half. The other is yet to be turned. I cord about 6 bowls from that crotch. The burning on the rim was done with a branding wire and the dots are a dull dentist drill bit. Finish is two coats of oil. 174788174789174790

I love the edge treatment of this piece. What do you mean by a branding wire?

That is GEEEEORGOUS!! Very nice work indeed. I too would like to know a bit more of the "how to" on the edge -- it's quite cool.

Hey Bob!! that really is a nice bowl!! What are the dimensions? It has that half art half utility look to it...but I like the bottom...it's one of those "pick me up" bowls!

Nickel chromium is what you suppose to use. I didn't have any yet and used a paper clip. I kinda of fried my pen because it didn't keep conducting electricity so well and I kept turning up the juice. The pen was melting in my hand as I finished. Chromium should work a lot better. My burner is a Nibsburner and puts out 165 watts. Mark Hubl has posted a number of links for better branding iron construction.

Beautiful bowl and the edge treatment just adds to it!

I'm also interested in the burning technique....

Bowl is a little over 14" across and 3 and 1/2" deep. Turned easily and sanded without problems.

That's some really nice crotch wood and you've done a great job of showing it off. I also like the interesting rim design.

Very cool... I think I might have preferred this one with an unadorned rim just because the wood is so beautiful, but the detail is very well done. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out of the other half.

don't know what you did with the log but the crotchwood was definitely worth the 10 bucks :D

A really beautiful bowl. Cherry is my favorite wood.

Thanks to all for the kind words. Cherry is a great wood to turn and the color makes it a winner also. The dental work on the rim was the easiest. Using a dull bit just enhances the darkening of the wood. Carving on cherry may have been a better choice, but I went with the burning.
