This is the last of the Spalted Alder. The bottom is a little big which I'm fine with...more functional than artsy. I wanted to work on keeping a curve going all the way from top to bottom. Also wanted a smaller opening than the last one, this one is 1-1/16". One good ridge on the inside toward the shoulder...see it? http://familywoodworking.org/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes.gifhttp://familywoodworking.org/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif, but instead of fighting it with a hole in the middle, I let the ridge win http://familywoodworking.org/forums/images/smilies/redface.gif. Sanded to 600 with 2 coats of WoP. Last coat will be Arm-r-seal cuz...well...I don't know why http://familywoodworking.org/forums/images/smilies/017.gif 5x4 with 1/4" walls all around. C&C encouraged

Maybe it's just me but I think the proportions are fine. The shape and spalting are very good!

Jim,

Very nice, the spalting lines are great, as is the form and finish.

Very nice Jim. Spalted wood is always pleasing to my eye. Your form is good. I think the bottom works on this piece because you have a well defined shoulder. Three nice proportions, throat, shoulder, base. I fight those nasty ridges in hollow forms all the time. Good work.

Have to agree with the others, I think this piece is very pleasing to the eye, and like you said more functionable, its a keeper.:)

Spalted Alder has long been one of my favorites, and you did a wonderful job with this piece. Nicely done!

Jim, this form works for me! Had it not been for the more defined shoulder, I think the extra mass in the lower section may not have worked so well. Beautiful wood!

BTW, as I understand it, Arm-R-Seal is just WOP, but using a different oil base. Seems that I recall it is soy based, and a little lighter in color.

I think you've done yourself proud! I generally like a smaller foot/base on my forms, but what you've done here is great.

I think it's a great pc and the spalting makes it but as david prefer a smaller base only my .02

Jim, I see nothing wrong with this one either, the finish lets the wood do the talking and the form is nice. There are not solid in stone rules for this style, for every native tribe had little design and shape changes in their own local pieces. So that lets us as woodturners who dearly love to emulate the beauty of the southwest style pottery a vast array of shapes and sizes to try and replicate. And the spalting add the character without having to try and come up with a perfect embellishment, using the wood to your advantage is half the battle!

Great job and Merry Christmas,

Jeff
