What are some guidelines to determining the age of English rules. How long has
"warranted boxwood" been stamped on rules?

A very long time, so it's not a good indication of the age. The authoritative reference on english rules was just published by Jane Rees - it's called (appropriately enough) "The Rule Book" and is available from the Astragal Press.
