This is my first attempt at not only ornaments but hollowing. I used tools I made myself from allen wrenches. The bulb is Spanish Ceder and the top and finial are Wenge. The bulb is a constant 1/8" thick throughout. The bulb was sealed with shellac then buffed and waxed. The top and finial was only waxed on the lathe.

Very, very well done! I have never turned either wood, but understand the Wenge can be difficult. You did a nice job with this one.

Dang nice no matter what # she be! I'm not a fan of wenge, but it looks like it served you well! Thanks for posting.

Looks good to me. You're a better man than I am getting details that fine in Wenge.

Hey Mike, the ornament looks great! Do you happen to have a link to instruction on how to make a hollowing tool from allen wrenchs? I have TONS of individual allens laying around, might as well use them for something contructive. Thanks for any info you could give me, Tim

Tim here is a couple pics of the tools I made. The handle is 3/4" diameter x 6" long tapped for a 1/4 20 set screw. the Allen wrench is 3/16 and the straight cutter is an old speed bore bit. I am going to bore the other end of the handle to accept a 1/4 Allen wrench

Thanks for posting this Mike, so from the looks of it the allen's have a grind on it somewhat similar to a bowl/spindle gouge is that correct? Looks like I will have another project when I get done with the tunring I am working on now. Thanks again, Tim
