I'm pretty sure this is the right forum.

Anyways I'm trying to figure what kinda wood this is, any ideas?

Looks like thick wood to me... someone else may have a better idea...

If it's relatively soft (will take a thumbnail imprint)... I've seen that color palette (purple, brown & green streaks on blonde-to-white) in poplar.

if it has a sickly sweet smell to it, I concur with Bob.

I have some poplar in my garage right now with very similar coloring, so I agree with everyone else

It doesn't take a thumbprint it seems very hard to me. Not sure about the smell I didn't think to smell it :p before I put a coat of natural stain on it.

Thanks for the help. It'll become a coat rack tonight after a bit of work! :)

Looking through this, I think you all are right.

Also if you haven't ever seen that site it's pretty amazing for it huge collection of wood grain pictures!

Im going to change it up and say its Walnut with a fair amount of sapwood in it. Walnut has a distinct smell when cut.

I've had a few pieces of persimmon that looked very similar to the piece on the left. Persimmon is very hard and (in my opinion)smells like toasted coconut when sawn or surfaced.

Well, Don you could be right because I was working with this stuff last night and it was RIDICULOUSLY hard. I've never broken so many screws even after drilling holes. Wowza.

Thanks all for the help. I guess it's just a mystery I can't even remember where I got this, I've just been carting it around with me for years.

Zebrawood?

my first thought was Walnut, but if it does not smell like walnut or turn your hands purple then I am most likely wrong.

If it was Zebrawood, you would know it by the smell, that stuff smells like a wet dog when you cut it.
The "extremely hard" comment leads me to Hickory or something in that family.

Is it acceptable to ask project problems/questions in this section or should I go to another section?

I was thinking Myrtle as well. But the OP is from Tennessee and Myrtle is local to Northern California and Oregon.
