Honestly, I did not even take notice of what type of tree it was from. I started cutting and hauling logs at day break again and ran across this one in a tree that was knocked down by a much larger one when felled.

This piece I cut about 10 inches on each side of it and was so tired I did not even notice the wood coloring until I carried it in the shop at the end of the day. I reckon tomorrow I will go cut the remainder of that tree up into blanks seeing the coloring runs throughout.

Be careful, it looks to me like there might be a 12-inch ambrosia beetle in there.:D

John see's HF's in his sleep haha

I will cut out a few bowl blanks then seal the log and set it aside and allow it to spalt. I believe what we are looking at is the result of Mineral staining. The bottom part of the tree was hollow for about 2 feet. Lucky for me the rest of the tree is solid and not punky. It should add some flavor to a normally plain wood.

As soon as it was light enough to see, I headed out and cut some blanks. It was 17 here this morning, nice and crisp and a great day to get work started!

Ken, that is some really nice looking wood! Great color! Going to be some beautiful contrast with the sapwood. I am looking forward to seeing what you do with this stuff.

It should be pretty, the rough outs I have of similiar stuff here are coming along real nice. I saved a few 4 foot long pieces to spalt naturally and I think I will give the beer method a go on a half dozen blanks. These wont make big bowls, maybe 6 or 7 inchers, but they should turn well.

All anchorsealed up and stored in the shop. Getting ready to go make some noise and cut more firewood, hopefully I will run across some more cool stuff!

Very pretty wood Ken. Should make some great turnings! Splitting them just once through the middle is fast and it saves some wood but having a bit of the pith in a lot of them will make them more prone to checking if they are going to be stored inside for long. You can only rough out so much so fast.:)

That is gorgeous wood. Great Haul!!!

17.... "Crisp".... Dang I would hate to see what you call "cold"!

As Baxter noted the pith will be your undoing. Even a small amount of pith can result in serious checking, ruining the blank (as I have found out on several occaisions).

LOL, by this evening every blank will not have the pith in it. I said "Stored" not put up haha. I will probably rough out every one today.

Well,it appears to me that ring shake has affected the lower portion. Coloring is excellent and I will get some bowls out of this but I will be limited to under 7 inchers. I will rough out a few more from the mid section and hopefully they will not have any issues.
