In my earlier post I didn't have any pic's of the large Maple rounds that Mike Smith and I loaded up onto his trailer manually. Here are a few pictures of it on his trailer after he got it home. I didn't measure it but I would have to guess it is around 40" +. It had some nice spalting around the edge and should be very beautiful when cut into blanks. It would be a good time to give him a call if you need some silver maple.

Scott, given Jack's comment about loading them manually...me thinks they don't need no stinking forklift to put it up on their lathe!

Beauties for sure!

Wow, you'd for sure need more than 2 of me to lift those suckers. Should make for some impressive turnings.

Holy cow now there is some turning wood. Getting them on the lathe I can't imagine but loading them just hurts.

you know, that third picture has a comfy Adirondack chair that I can just see someone...perhaps me...sitting there and making comments like "be careful guys...don't hurt yourselves" or "be careful guys...don't hurt that log" or...just raising a glass of tea (or whatever ;)) and saying "fine work guys, let me know when you're ready to go, I'll load this chair".:p

Jack, aside from the outstanding feat of strength and engineering getting this done, there is some gnarly looking bark on some of that wood, and I am betting there is some remarkable figure in there, as well!

Thanks for posting the pics!!

About the first thing I noticed in your pic was how slick that bed looked. Good for sliding stuff on and ..... Thanks for the pics. More than a few blanks there.

holy smokes! A guy could get a hurn-a-keee :eek::D trying to manage those! If that large crotch piece is made into a giant platter, then I want to see that one.........it could be used as a disk to slide down the hill in the snow! :D

They are rather large chunks of wood. The metal bed of the trailer helped when moving them around with a peavey, but was a disaster when I pulled the second piece which was the large crotch piece onto the trailer. It simply slid up onto the trailer and right off the back side. After a number of failed attempts to load it back onto the trailer, I had to drag it to a better bank to load from. We then spent about 30 minutes with a small come a long and peavey to get it onto the trailer for the ride home. I don't know if many Creekers are aware, but Mike will be cutting these rounds up to sell to turners. He has a wide selection of wood blanks from all around the USA.

I can highly recommend Mike Smith!! The source for the bulk of my wood - ambrosia maple, chestnut, Claro walnut, BLM burls, and a bunch of other stuff that I have bought from him. Great guy, too, and a supporter of our contests.

Let me second that - I've gotten a lot of stuff from him, and his prices can't be beat, the wood it great, and he's a very nice guy!
