I've just finished getting my shop set up and i'm ready to find some wood.

I've been commissioned to build a box in a reddish wood. i don't think the client cares or knows much about the wood choice. i'm still trying to decide if i should find some mahogany or try to get a dark red stain into some red oak. haven't done much with tints and stains yet so will have to learn to do that.

the box is approximately a 12" cube and one side will be glass. since he doesn't care much about the species is getting something like mahogany too expensive?

i can get red oak at the borg, but where can i find more premium hardwood around south georgia or north florida, carolina ?...i'm willing to travel a couple hours.

thanks,
andy

Yes, mahogany would look great, and yes, it's a bit pricey. But the amount that you'll need for a 12" box is small, and therefore the total is not a crusher.

But if the customer is mostly unawares, you might want to get some poplar, or soft maple, and use dyes or stains to get the color you want. (Note that even with mahogany, you'll need to stain/dye it.)
