I finished this one about a week ago, not yet buffed. I was told this is tulipwood poplar, first time turning this and it has some nice purple streaks running through it. I finished it with a coat of AO, followed with a coat of medium walnut DO followed with a coat of dark walnut DO. followed with 2 coats of Waterlox. After all that, the purple streaks are now hard to see, especially in the photos. I'm giving this to my son and DIL for Christmas and the wanted something dark, that's why the walnut DO. Personally, I liked it better natural. The finial is Hormigo Negro, dyed black. This is some of the hardest wood I've worked with. I did one of these finials in ebony, and this stuff was a lot harder and more time consuming than ebony when sanding. I won't be doing another in Hormigo Negro! The HF is 9-3/4" wide and 7" tall, 11-1/2" with the finial. As always, comments and/or citicism is welcomed.

Finial is over the top Richard. If anything...it takes away from a great looking HF:D:D:p;)!!!

Very nice work Richard. I think the piece looks great. For me, the finial works very well on this piece. Your work on these has really come along. Doing these in really hard wood has got to be a two edged sword. On one hand they have strength and can handle the design, on the other, the sanding has got to be nothing but FUN. Great work.

You know, the last time I turned a finial like that was in my dreams. Like others have said, the time and patience for something like that.... well all I can say is wow.

This is a great piece, Richard. The finial work is superb and the form is well done. I zoomed in on the finial, and it has almost a metallic look to it - neat!! Maybe that is why it is so hard.:D
