I'm not posting this in D&D because this isn't so much about being a "deal" (while it might be one, I don't know), but I just thought those here on this part of the forum may appreciate it. If the moderators want to move it, feel free.

Check out this monster! Never mind that he calls it a Mettle Lathe. This thing is way too much of a beast to worry about that... It would be a MAJOR restoration. But a piece of old iron for sure!

It would cost more to move it than buy it!

I like how he says "Partially disassembled for EASY transportation" I doubt there will be anything easy about moving that monster!

Hi Folks,

Many years ago, a friend of mine bought lathe similar to this one. He wanted to turn some columns. He had one of our machinist friends make a new spindle assembly for it. There were special bearing cups that fitted into the orginal spindles morse taper and the other end of the spindle. All in all, he had a large lathe for not much money. No extra weight was required (grin). If I remember correctly, the new spindle was 1.5" X 8tpi. The drive was step pullies, a jack shaft, and a 3 hp motor. Moving the tailstock was an effort.

This hummer looks like the three WW 2 surplus ones we had in metal shop in HS in the 1950's. The only thing I "turned" on one was the knurling on a forged 12 inch drift punch I made - clearly overkill ;-)

I would love to have the big beast, but I would need another building to house it in! Heck if nothing else that good stuff could be sold off the the rest sold for scrap and you would come out ahead of the deal! Tough to see these old workhorses go to pasture!

Yea I don't think it runs on babbit bearings, Depending on the weight that price might be near scrap price. It certainly looks like a good deal to me.
