i tried for a thick glue line throughout for a sharp definition between segments this definitely did not turn out the way i envisioned it , not nearly

maple, cherry and walnut overall height about 6" overall width 5" approx thickness is pretty much uniform at 1/4"

2nd hollow form 1st attempt at segmenting though its really more of a glued up block

comments/critiques welcomed i know the glue lines are lees than great :(

A Picasso!!!!:D Don, this reminds me of the art "exercises" that my college art teacher made us do - very contemporary looking.

You know this know, but visible glue lines never work - for anything. Best to use veneer, I think.

The form on this one doesn't quite work for me. I prefer a little more taper in the bottom carried all the way into the base, thereby eliminating the foot.

i was sort of trying for a hot air balloon look just a novelty piece really

the other thing i was shooting for was a pretty consistent arc throughout the curve i guess that makes this one a de facto practice piece :)

yeah the glue line thing flopped badly

this one actually started out to be a pretty small diameter base until i decided to go for the hot air balloon thing my glueup was a bit too short to actually pull off the look i was going for i think

chalk this one up to learning :)

If you try this again (and I would) definitely use some dark veneer or fiber board such as is often used for guitar peg-heads. Also think about glueing up a pattern similar to the 'front' face appearance for the sides. The simple round does not work for me, but a segmented piece would really be nice. Also consider a more standard shape.

If you want to do a balloon - go all the way and make the bottom open and use some dowels to raise it above a turned gondola.

Don,

Great idea! I like tghe balloon thing.

I would get some ebony or walnut veneer for the joints.

Keep up the good work.
