For a long time I have had immense difficulty getting SMC to properly display new posts. I finally was having to clear my cookies and temporary intertnet files every 20 minutes when I finally figured out how to fix IE to properly display SMC.
IE Version 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158
OS: Windows XP version 2002 SP2
1) Tools -> internet options

2) Go to tab "General" and find the section "Temporary Internet Files" and click on "Settings"
http://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=14462&stc=1
3) In the section that says "Check for new versions of stored pages" click the radio button that says "never" then click "Ok"
http://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=14463&stc=1
4) Back in the "General" tab of "internet options" go to the section "temporary internet files" and click on "Delete Files" then click "Ok"

5) Now SMC should work for you. The only caveat to this modification is that unless you are on broadband, internet pages will load a lot slower. It is kind of a pain, but you can toggle the tab when you browse SMC, or you can use IE for browsing SMC and use another browser such as Mozilla Firefox for your general browsing.
I hope this helps everyone who is having issues getting SMC to display new threads!
