I have decided to do a major upgrade from my Jet 1642 2 HP lathe to something with a bigger swing, more HP and better quality. I am picking it up tomorrow and setting it up this weekend, if all goes well. It is a 2 day trip to get it and return but very much worth the effort.

I will post pics asap.

Dale - looking forward to seeing what you are upgrading too! As much as I love my lathe - the issue of swing does come up a lot when I rough out a blank!

Safe travels!

Robust AB. When I was considering one, decent option was a trip there to pick up vs shipping charges.

There was a good deal on a Big Oneway in New Hampshire? If I was a betting man that just may be it.

That really changes the game now, doesn't it?
Wonder what the possibility of finding out if new or used?

 Even worse! That means he could have dropped the 1646 off on his way there, snagged some of my money, then continued along to pick up the new one.

Meh, once I get mine set up I'll forget about everyone else's... :p

Will be in Leesburg in the morning.

How much are you looking for? I bought the last one in Purcellville about 18 months ago.

No sure yet, it has some extra tool rests and most likely a vacuum chuck system. I will figure it out by Sunday and post in the classified, here.

Yes, James, I got the whole package and the seller decided to throw in a lot of extras. I will most likely sell off the 60" extension because I do not do many long spindles.

Dale,
Can you swing by Utah to drop off the 60" extension on your way back to Virginia?

Just a quick cell phone pic to show that I got it. I did get the whole package but I will be selling the 60" extension and the dust hood is already sold. Still setting it up and figuring things out.

My friend and I left VA at 0500 on Friday, drove to NH and loaded up, started back and stopped in New Haven, CT overnight and were back home at 1100 Sat morning. It was 1021 miles, round trip.

Congratulations!! I watched that lathe on the New Hampshire Craigslist for a good part of the summer. It was a little more of an upgrade than I felt I could justify. Not to mention I didn't know how it would fit in my van! Had to settle for just a New Hampshire 3520A.

Congrats Dale. I looked at the ad and drooled. I am glad someone from the Creek picked it up.

It seems like a couple of guys in your area will have just missed buying your old lathe...... who was that again?

Dale Bright
12-12-2010, 8:58 PM
Well here is a pic with the big guy in use. I have to finish some 8 & 9 inch bowls for Christmas presents, so nothing too big for a while. The big lathe is great to turn on. This ash bowl was really warped and on my Jet it would have caused a bit of vibration. On the 2436, there was no vibration at any speed, smooth as silk.

I still have some cleaning to do on the lathe and I still have to do some work to arrange my lights but I am very happy with it. It will take some time to get used to the new controls and having all of the bed space is great, lot's of temporary tool storage.
