Here's a duck call I finished up a few days ago. It is purpleheart that I sanded to 400 grit, then took the torch to it to get the purple color to pop and to get the blackened portions. It was then sanded to 1200 grit and finished with countless coats of CA. The CA was wet sanded from 1200 to 2000 grit then buffed on the Beal with tripoli and white diamond.

The band on the call is aluminum that I left with a mill finish. The band is pinned with three copper pins. I'd normally use aluminum pins to match the band but tried copper to see if I liked the look.....I do not. But otherwise I'm happy with this one.

I doubt the purpleheart will retain its deep purple color over time, but time will tell.

C&C welcomed!

Aaron, what is your secret for such a nice CA finish?

How do you get it to apply without being gloppy in places?

That is one classy call!! Love the deep color on this one. I do agree on the copper pins, though.

Question - where are you getting the anodized aluminum bands on some of your calls?

How did you do the sound board.

The soundboard is cut from purpleheart as well, using a toneboard jig that I bought and modified to suit my taste. Quite a lot of work goes into developing the toneboard configuration.

Chris we're in the same town, I'd be happy to show you sometime.

I fold little pieces of paper towel into thumbnail size, use one drop of medium CA at a time, then shoot it with Satellite City activator. Probably 15-20 coats. One drop doesn't go very far...Probably 3/4" of the length of the call at a time. Then wet sand with tons of water and 1200-1500-2000, then Beal buff. It takes a lot of practice but once you get the hang of it, it isn't hard to do.

A guy named Ron Gould does the anodized aluminum bands. The band on this call is plain aluminum and I get those from Echo duck calls in Arkansas. If you want Ron's info, PM me and I'll look it up for you. He does a few different anodized colors and also does laser engraving/custom engraving on them for some folks. They cost a few bucks a piece as I recall.

If I were a duck I would fly in close just to admire the finish. Good thing I'm not a duck. I would be an easy target.
