there is a large void in the center of this and the crack extended nearly all the way through it , but a fair amount of CA glue and a forstner bit for the center turned this into a candle holder :D
the pedestal is cherry

comments and critiques welcomed http://www.sawmillcreek.org/picture.php?albumid=508&pictureid=4585

And a fine one it is, Don! Lot of character and well worth the effort you put into saving it.

That Cathy Schaewe oak burl has been widely disbursed! There are pieces all over this country - fun seeing what folks do with it.

Great job on a great looking piece of oak burl . . . BUT . . . the bottom/stand looks like an afterthought. It doesn't go with the beautiful piece of Oak IMO.

Frank;
you are right that the bottom was an afterthought, once it was obvious that there was no way to hollow it out and keep it from exploding (maybe some of the more experienced/better equipped guys here could have pulled that off) it became a candle holder and right or wrong i decided it needed more height thus the plain cherry pedestal (thot it would not draw attention from the oak) it would have been better if i could have made the transition flow but there just wasn't anything but air in there to work with ,i turned that part as thin as i dared :( had to kinda carve the top of the cherry to fit the irregular hole
not thrilled with the pedestal part but the oak is definitely worth looking at IMO

thanks for your input i am learning alot from all the comments and suggestions on these type posts

More of Cathy's pretty oak burl... I'm putting in her nomination for most generous creeker of the year!

I love the void/bark inclusion. Looks like you made the best of a difficult bit of timber.

I agree with Franks opinion on the pedestal, you say you drilled that center out, I would take the pedestal out, and make a plug to fit in there, it would make it so much better looking, just IMO of course ;-)))
