I turned this piece back in Nov of 09 and it looked great on the lathe. Now, after I took it off and was finishing it just did not look right to me. This thing sat on a shelf in the shop for all that time and finally fell off with the tall mouth hitting the metal edge of my miter saw fence. Broke a big chunk out and I was forced to finally do something with it. I remounted and cut away most of the tall cherry mouth and turned a cap with integral finial to fit. "Feels" much better to me now. Guess sometimes accidents are a good thing. 9 (11 with finial) X 5.5 and finished with DO..Bill...

See what happens when you leave stuff sitting around? I'd like to know how you remounted it

The first picture pictures a very nice looking hollow form but the 2nd one pictures a better looking one.

Good save. I agree, it looks better now.

I think you've done a nice job on the revision. The lid and finial are nicely done, and the curves match up well.

Jim, cole jaws on one end and cone center on the other, just a jam chuck really...Bill..

Bill thats just plain beautiful all the way around. The revision is perfect, and the lines going up could not be better. Where do you go from here?:)

Bill, great save and an improvement for sure. Very good ingenuity on getting it remounted, too!

I like the fix you gave it. Really nice..........you seem to really have an eye for form. Your curves on your pieces always seem to flow without interruption.

Just real nice there, Bill.

William, The mods have done it a world of good. I think the proportions very good and the new final arrangement has nothing but enhance the piece.

Well done!

Bill, what a pleasing difference. I like the second go at it, looks good to the eye.

Nice. I think I'll start throwing my stuff at my miter saw :D

Much better now IMO but my immediate thought was "why". Posts like this that immediately make me ask that question are some of the most interesting/beneficial ones for me. The obvious ones after looking at it and they have nothing to do with the turning, are different background color, slightly different camera angle which may look more pleasing, better exposure, and the grain pattern is more pronounced. The foot doesn't appear quite as tiny in the second though you may not have touched it in the revision.

So now to the top. Is it the ogee shape to the cap that appeals, the fact that it has a finial and doesn't appear chopped off/incomplete, or both?
Thanks for letting me think outloud.:) I'm sure I've missed a why so would be interested in hearing it.

Much better IMO, it seems to flow from top to bottom now!

Great save, and definite improvement. The finial on the revision looks well suited to the piece.
Great job!

Nice save. I also like the second iteration much better than the first. The finial complements the form nicely.

Wow. I really like the new cap and the finial. Excellent work. I thought the previous shape was good. If anything it was just a hair to tall past the collar for my tastes.

Again fantastic work all the way around.

That is more than a "fix". That's a caterpillar that turned into a beautiful butterfly.

Bill, I think it was meant to be. Time always has a way of fixing things, even turnings that we are not happy with, but not sure what the real trouble is! It now has lots more character with the top and finial.

Another safe,

Jeff

Wow - what an amazing transformation! Nothing wrong with the original version but have to admit that the modified form works quite well! What a difference!

Nice rework Bill! Thanks for sharing!
