View Full Version : how to buff?

Prelude:
I bought a set of reconditioned Berg Chisels. They have been buffed by the restorer to a bright almost chrome-like finish and in a way that retained original detail ( didn't round off sharp edges ). They are beautiful.
Now I've bought a few odd Bergs and I'd like to buff them to match.

I've had a variety of buffing wheels, but they seem to turn to fluff after a short time, so I push the tool into the mush and get an imprecise result. Also, these fuzzy wheels don't have the range to take an old black steel chisel to a mirror finish.
So, my question:
How does one do this? I just haven't been able to get a grip on it. Do I need a hard felt wheel to keep precision? Is a 6" wheel on a 3450 RPM bench grinder too small? Do I need a coarse and a fine wheel? Can people recommend fine and coarse buffing compounds - specific brands. Liquid or stick?
