This is a platter I made for my daughter's wedding in June from NZ Kauri that I obtained nearly 30 years ago. It was supposed to be legs for a coffee table but it never got built. The platter is 14" in diameter and the inlay is NZ Paua shell.

Kelvin, very nice work on the platter, and the inlay work! The different grain pattern of the glue up adds some additional interest - hope it doesn't present a weak joint for you.

John, I'm still not ready to cut up the table top! It's 24" x 50" x 1.5", cut with a chainsaw mill. The glue seems to be doing fine on this piece and the wood is light and very stable.

If anyone is interested, click here (http://www.ancientwood.com/extraction) to see how this wood is recovered from logs that were lost during harvesting over 100 years ago!

That's really nice looking Kelvin! Love the color contrast between wood and inlay! Your daughter must love it!

Very nice work! Thanks for sharing!

Beautiful Platter. It immediately reminded me of an article in Finewoodworking not long ago about the importance of grain orientation. Fascinating video too! Thanks for posting!

That is a beautiful piece Kelvin. I really like the rim treatment and the inlay. Contrasting colors sure set it off.

Nice job piecing that platter. I am sure it is even more of a stunner in "person".
