Spalted sweetgum bowl

Afraid I don't turn bowls much anymore since the hollowing bug bit me. But this piece of sweetgum which I found at the bottom of a brush pile back in '07 was just begging for it. The pics don't show it but the large spalt lines at the back of the bowl are green rather than black. I had read somwhere that spalting has a range of colors from black to green to red but have seen nothing but black till this piece. About 10X3 and finished with home brew DO....Bill...

I may not have noticed it right off, but now that you mention it, the spalt shows a nice dark green on my monitor... very nice.

I've started experimenting with homebrew DO on bowls, and would be interested in your recipe. I used matte poly, and my bowls lack the shine I see in your pics.

Good looking bowl! Beautiful markings! I like the slanted rim - just a little different than the norm!

It's been my understanding that the various colors you can get in spalted wood depend on which fungi colonize the wood. The colors result from 2 different fungi putting up barriers to guard their food supply - which is the wood!
