Here are the bowls I cored from the other Black Ash burl (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?t=153740). The larger bowl is 8" across and 2.75" high. I always leave burl bowls thicker and with a flat rim to show off the color. The finish on these is the same as the Black Ash hollow form, sanded to 400, walnut oil and a light buffing with tripoli.

Those are spectacular bowls. Good call on the thick walls and flat rims. They really show off the wood.

Those are beauties. The flat rim surely does show off that beautiful wood.

That stuff is gorgeous!! I particularly like the smaller one, though the sapwood in the other is kind of neat, too.

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. I always try to make simple and hopefully pleasing shapes that reveal the true artistry and work that was done by Mother Nature, long before I even saw the wood. I try to achieve a finish that shows the natural look of the wood but one that is also has a tactile appeal so that it is a pleasure to hold and feel.

My wife laid claim to these bowls when she first held them. This was the first Black Ash Burl I have turned and it was a pleasure to work with. It did have a bit of an unpleasent smell but it cut very well and sands easily.
