I was wondering if someone out there could help me. I would like to make a bible box. I want to do a reproduction of an 18th century box with carvings. If you have any pictures, I'd love to see them. I have a few ideas but haven't found one that I really love yet.

The only deviation that I want to do from original ones is that I plan to use Cherry, instead of the traditional Pine or Oak. Mainly because I have plenty of cherry and don't really care for pine or oak stained. Also, most of the ones I've seen have simple lap joints or rabbets. I would probably prefer dove tails (I need the practice) but don't want to deviate from traditional period features. If there are any examples in cherry and dove tails, please let me know.

Thanks for your help. I promise pictures when I have some to show.

Buy the way, your tilt top tables in the other thread are great. I would love to have the ability to built something like that.

You might want to check

http://www.oldemill.com/draw_pubs.htm

Scroll down to the bottom. The plans are not cheap but of high quaility.
This is the same box (plan) that Gene Landon used as a gift for former president Jimmy Carter.

There is also conversation on bible boxes in the

www.sapfm.org

forum. Believe it was in the heading "other forms".

Enjoy

I built 2 using the plan in " Heirloom Projects For Woodworkers" By Woodworkers Journal Editors. ISBN 1880618036.
The cherry is shown in the pic. I carved the outline of a rose on the lid. http://frontpage.execulink.com/pohallor/bbox2.jpg
If you scroll downto the 8th pic the Walnut Bible Box (http://frontpage.execulink.com/pohallor/Projects%201.htm) is here
There is also a plan for one in John G. Shea's book Making Original Pennsylvania Furniture" on page 196
