I am looking at at the JJ 1/2" set and the DP stinger set.

Which way do I go.

I am just about to dive into HF and have a very very limited budget. So I am going to start with smaller hollow forms.

Any input or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I have the Stinger and Scorpion and like the set up. John's stuff looks awfully good as well. I got a smokin deal on the DP stuff so that is what pushed me in that direction. These type of tools are very similar in how they work. I just put my stingers in some handles but like the pistol grip alot.

Mark I have been leaning towards the stinger.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my thread.

Is the anything you do not like about the stinger set? O and where can I get a smoking deal on them?:D

Mike,
I have both but find myself using John's nearly all the time.

A couple observations on them. The set screw for the bits is tiny. Big Paws will strip it. So far I have been ok. Don points this out in his instructions.

The only other thing is the size. It seems that most have standardized on 3/8 or 1/2 shaft size. The Stingers are 7/16. The pistol grip comes with all the bushing's that you will need. If you have other handles or want to make some you will have to get some appropriate bushings. Not a problem. See my tool handle thread for what I did.

Other than those two nits I am very happy and would pull the trigger again on the setup.

Thanks Mark.

The fact that the stinger is 7/16 diameter was a turn off for me initially.

Bill how do you sharpen the inserts? Do you use Johns jig?

Mike,

Pretty easy to make a jig for sharpening tips. I made this with square stock and thumb screw. I can sharpen round, square and tear drop on it. I usually set the bevel and then use diamond hone on the flat side when I am hollowing.

Thanks Mark.

I think Don sells the stinger set with a jig. That's another plus for the stinger.

I have both, and I prefer the Jordans. The stinger set is useful and versatile, especially if you already have or plan to buy the scorpian set.

I have the Pencil Scorpion and Stinger set. As Mark said, stripping out the little set screw can be a problem, so far I've been lucky. The reducers that come with the Stinger are handy to have. I also have the Jordan 1/2" bent tool that can be used in the DP pistol grip handle.

Yes I use John's sharpening device.
