Last year I had set aside a Maple log and I was pretty happy with the coloring it took on. Tonight I turned this stopper from a blank of that log

Thanks, it is supposed to look like a mushroom:D I have a few that are thick and working on a few that have thinner stems with a fat and squatty head.

And one of my oldest son turning a game call. Nice to see young people interested in this stuff!

Nice stoppers! I just ordered some this morning to use up some pretty scraps I have been saving. I will have to read up on using a CA finish.

http://kenhill.smugmug.com/Other/Bowls-and-Wood-Turning/CMR4647/1111618812_tBvVM-L.jpgOK, I give up - what do you call with that one - wine delivery trucks????

Nice work, Ken. On the mushroom one, what about doing a kind of slight cove under the "hood" like a stem might be vs. the convex shape? Might be interesting.

I did under cut it a little, but I cant bend to much so I did not go any further. I made sure on these blanks to leave them a bit larger then I use for most game calls so I could experiment. I would like to have a much broader top , thinner in top length with a nice curve up under the top like you are suggesting. The stem can be varied, and IMO a bit thinner as it approaches the top as well. If I can get the top the way I want it, I can start detailing it up a bit more.

Haha, you have the majority of it down pat!

I actually hate it, but it works so well and is so fast I cant not do them:o

Nice stoppers Ken. With all the maple I have been turning lately I thought the first one must have come from around here. Great to see your son turning!

#2 is my favorite, although either would be welcome in my Merlot! That remind me...I'm down to 2 stoppers:eek:, better call Ruth!

Baxter...I promise I'll do a video of CA finish technique for stoppers and pens. It really is easy. It honestly takes 2-3 minutes and your done!

Nice stoppers Ken! That is the first time I have seen a mushroom stopper - looks pretty cool!

Nice to see you son getting involved with turning! You'll have to post some of his work one of these days!
