I normally turn a recess in the base and grab the bowl in expanding mode. Then just leave the recess for the base, but I used a tenion on my first natural edge bowl. I needed a jam chuck. I was playing with an old nerf ball and noticed how firm it was under a little pressure. After cutting the ball in half and mounting it to a plywood face plate I owe the grandsons a new ball.

Still have a little work to even out the finsih and wipe on some more poly, but I wanted to photgraph before it became too shiny.

Not sure what wood this is. It is from a tree that blew down in the woods behind our house. No bark or leaves at this time. I think it might be elm.

Great idea for a jam chuck! Also, a very nice bowl. Sure could be Elm.

Neat idea, and a good looking bowl. What did you use to cut the nerf ball - electric knife??

My question was the same as John Keeton's. I can't imagine trying it with anything else but a knife....

I held both sides of the ball and slowly ran it through the band saw. Nice straight cut. I thought it might grab or something when it entered or exited the cut and was ready to let go in a hurry, but it didn't.

Bandsaw was my next guess, but I could just see that nerf ball hanging up in a big wad and my blade flying off the wheels!!! Glad to know it worked OK.

Love it! Please... where is the other half of the ball?
