so I went back up to Webster for another round of rust hunting this morning. not quite as many tools this week as last but I did find a North Brothers Yankee 2101 10".
It has the red "YANKEE" in the top knob so my understanding is that it is definitely before the Stanley takeover. The ratchet is very smooth. Price $18.

I also picked up a piece of leather form a belt maker to line my bench vice jaws with when I build my bench.

My question is in regards to a Sargent 1080. The guy I bought the brace from said he has a 1080 in wooden box with all the cutters in the canvas roll. I know the 1080 compares to the Stanley 45, my question is what would be a fair price for one? I am seeing prices all over the place, including some over $400, but I can find 46's for less then that. He is bringing the 1080 next week for me to see.

Anyway here is a pic of the 2101 and the leather :)

I'd look to ebay completed auctions for the value of the 1080. Find one that looks in similar condition with the same stuff.

45s and 1080s are all over the board depending on completeness, condition and whoever is buying.

Anything above $200 (actually, I wouldn't even touch that, but I think the market will bring that for a nice 45/1080 complete with box), and I'd start looking to buy a 46 instead. Keep your eyes open for 46 bodies, you can make the irons for them, and they not expensive.

Thanks David, I forgot you can search the bay for completed listings, looks like the last 2 that went on the bay were both in the $80-$100 range. that is very much to my liking and I will file it away for next week. I know my High end is in the $140 range and that ends up being my Christmas present... which I can live with :)
Thats not saying the guy will sell for that price.

Andrew,

If you are looking for a Stanley 46 as a user, I suggest that you do not look for one with a complete set of blades in good condition as they will be very expensive. As a user however, a complete set of new O1 blades for the Stanley 46 can be purchased from the St James Bay tool company for about $100 and they will require minimal honing before use. SJB also makes a 3/4" cutter for the 46 that Stanley didn't make but is very handy for cutting of dadoes.

For what it's worth. the last Sargent 1080, absolutely complete and mint in the original box, was sold for $140. They are excellent users, at least as good if not better than the 45, but they lack the demand of the Stanley tools, thus the lower price.

Granted, prices for 45s are way down from a couple of years ago as well.

Thare's a 46 on the bay right now. Looks good but only 1 cutter.
Maybe an alternative?
There's also a couple of 50's, one complete with all the cutters.

Just adding to previous posts. Saw a 1080 a few months (complete) go for $80-$90 and then one last month went for ~$230.
