Are there any good books or magazine articles with bottle stopper patterns and dimensions. I have a real hard time visualising and getting the proportions right. I know what looks bad, but can't get a good proportion worked out in my head.

Thanks
Eric

Visit Ruth Niles' site for several excellent examples of stoppers (including a brief tutorial on turning a stopper). I like a rounded rather than pointed top in case the user needs to use some force installing the stopper in a bottle (easier on the palm of your hand!). I also highly recommend Ruth's stainless steel stopper components if you need those. Ruth's site:

Eric - another option for you is to use the search function here. Just type in bottle stoppers and you will find lots of examples from our members!

goto http://images.google.com (http://images.google.com/) and enter "wood bottle stoppers". It will return LOTS of them.

Eric, on my website, there's a page "Finished Designs". There are over 75 pictures of stoppers that my customers have made. Some are glass and carved so they wouldn't pertain to wood. I've gotten several good ideas for patterns from them.

If you make something that feels good in your hand, you have a good design.

Have fun

Eric,

Here is a link to an article I used when I wanted to give bottle stoppers a whirl. It is by Charles Cadenhead. What I found really helpful was his page of design ideas. I tend to go free form, but one of the fellows in our club that sells a lot of stoppers has three or four designs and uses really nice patterns to help duplicate his styles. Good luck.

Thanks everyone for the links. Now I am overwhelmed by ideas. I hope Ruth's stoppers get here soon.

Eric,

Ruth's Bottle stoppers will get to you fast. She has a great product, fast service and is fantastic to talk to. I just placed an order a couple days ago and my stoppers are here already. Her site is also a great place for ideas. I go there often to just look around.

Have fun, Mike

Here's a link to a fellow who has a DVD on making bottle stoppers, PLUS he's got a PDF with a number of patterns:
