I turned a replica of an Elder Wand from the Harry Potter movie.
I had to use my "Jeff Nicol" design steady rest that I built to keep it from vibrating.
It is dry maple with BLO,mahogany stain, and tung oil.
I had to use a drill to make the designs on it.
I think my son will like it for Christmas.:)

Now, that is an interesting project!! I have not watched the Harry Potter movies, but it sure looks like you may have captured the theme.

Does it work????? Nice job. If he's a Harry Potter fan, he'll love it and since it's made by his dad it already has some magic in it. Sure is a nice steady also.

Jeff, I wish I could turn one that would turn half of my wood collection into gold, will that one fit the bill?

Looks like you had fun with it, I also have not seen the Potter movies but one day when I have a whole day to do nothing I may rent them all and see what all the fuss is about!

Keep on a spinning,

Jeff

If it's an "Elder Wand" shouldn't it be made of "Elder"?

It looks very nice, i am sure your son will love it no matter what it is made of.

Jeff,
In the story I am sure you remember that wand is unbeatable in the hands of the rightful owner. I think you are going to be the unbeatable Dad when your son opens it at Christmas.
John,
If you haven't read the Harry Potter books you're missing stories by arguably the most fertile imagination of our time. Though I've read them all, I have the audio books, spoken by Jim Dale in the shop and listen to them when the machines are still. Tomorrow evening I will let my wife and daughter talk me into seeing the recently released movie.

Jeff my little girl was standing over me when I opened the picture and she knew what it was and loved it. If you do not mind me asking how long is it? I may try to make one for her.

Mike, this one is 13 1/2 in. due to the length of material on hand.
From the photos I Googled I would think 16 in. would be correct.
Jeff those movies usually put me to sleep but I stayed awake for the latest one.
If this thing turns out to have power I might point it at the ex,Hee,Hee.

Here is a quote from Harry Potter Wiki...

"...the Elder Wand was most likely created by the eldest of the three Peverell brothers (http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Peverell_family), Antioch (http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Antioch_Peverell). It is fifteen inches long, made of Elder. It has a core of Thestral (http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Thestral) tail hair (http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Thestral_tail_hair), which is "a tricky substance that only wizards that mastered death can control," according to legend."

So there is your specifications for an Elder Wand:rolleyes: Now I'm off to find some Thestral tail hair:eek:.
