I have started experimenting with embellishment. This one is really 'multi-media.

The bowl is 5 1/2" diameter and 2 1/2" tall. Slightly spalted sycamore, turned, carved, burned and painted with acrylic paints and then lacquered. Finish is not complete as it needs final sanding and a few more coats, buffing, etc. but is showable. The bottom is hard to see, but there is a subtle 'foot' about 1 1/4" diameter - almost more of a slight depression to provide a circle for the bowl to sit stably on.

The knot design and colors are loosely based on illustrations from the 'Book of Kell' a 9th century Irish treasure. Comments and critiques are welcome as always.

Very nice Thom! As my ancestors are fairly recent from the emerald isle, I like the embellishment. I think the multi color makes it appear more whimiscal than 1 solid, dark color; ie, black.
I'm watching all the possilbe embellishments carefully for ideas down the road. Keep em coming!

Ireland supposedly has no snakes. That's a dragon of course:)

I believe St Patrick drove them all out. Great bowl Thom, love the colors, really brings out the warmth in the wood.

Hi Tom:

That is a very nice bowl! I hope you will bring it to the Florida symposium se we can see it in real life.

Thom, I missed this thread for some reason!?! Very nice work, and vibrant. The Celtic feature ring really gives this bowl a lot of interest, on top of a good bowl in and of itself. Well done!!

Very nice but I am curious, is there anyway to do a celtic knot like that using segmentation?

From some of the pictorial pieces I've seen, I guess if your bandsaw skills were good enough you could - mine aren't.

Looks like a lot of work but it makes what might be a plain wood pretty interesting and colorful. Well done!

James, this may not be what you had in mind, but it's an endless knot done as a form of segmentation.

Baxter, I specifically chose this piece - very plain grained blank - to do the carving on for that reason. I think part of our job as 'wood artists' is to display the wood in its beauty where possible. Embellishments are fine, but should not take away from the natural beauty of the wood. This piece turned out to have a little spalting color (no black line or punky white rot, nothing dramatic in other words) which shows on the inside and was not visible in the blank.

Thom,

Nice work. The bowl has a nice shape and the theme is well done. The embellishments look good and I love the color. I saw the Book of Kells while visiting Dublin. Lots of color was used, it was quite amazing. Well done.
