A way to make a thin top thicker?

Yep, IF you do the right glue-ups. Say the wood for a table top is only 4/4 stock, but you need to make a top at 8/4.

First, make the panel a few inches wider thatn the "finished" size, and a few inches longer. Now, after the squaring up of the ends, make a second crosscut about 2" in. Also rip about 2" off each side. Then, miter these cut-offs. Next, glue the cut-offs back on the UNDERSIDE of the top, keeping the grain lined up with the top. That is, if a piece came from end"A", rotate it 180 degrees and glue it back on end "A". If side "B", rotate that 180, and gkue back on to side"B". What you will end up with is a 8/4 top around the edges, with the miter joint hidden underneath.

Actually I do that fairly often. If you fold the pieces under you end up with a bookmatch on all the edges. I think it looks especially nice on the ends.
