Here is a piece of Cottonwood I hope that you like it. It is finished with three coats of toung oil and then Beal Buffed with all three compounds. Critique welcome.

WOW... the curl in that wood is amazing. I love the form and the rim treatment, but that curl... Oh my!

Nice turning, Ron, and Wow!, that's as far removed from any cottonwood I've ever used as I can imagine. I've only used it a little bit, but I've never seen any with any figure at all, let alone figure that exciting.

Ron......what a stunning piece of wood and a beautifully simple form to allow the wood to be the star of the show! Well done Sir!

The oil and buffing really bring out the best in the wood. The little bark or limb makes you appreciate the curl even more. Great shape also.

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments. Jhon the rest of the tree is in my shop. I got three or four pieces of this tree because that is all I wanted at the time and I did not know what I had at the time. I wish that I had taken the whole tree because the pieces that I got all looked like the one posted.

Ron,

This is a beautiful bowl! The curl is outstanding, as is the form you put to it. I have a cottonwood rough out that I wanted to try (my first cottonwood) and it looks nothing like yours unfortunately.

Really wonderful. I agree that the design allows the curl to be the star. Very elegant.

Very impressive bowl, stunning wood - excellent photos! Capturing curl and how it plays with the light is always a hard thing to do. Your photos really showcase the effect quite well!

I have only seen curl like that once before in cottonwood. A small sawmill in Iowa that I visit once in a while had some. The owner had built blanket chests and other items out of it, not sure he even sold any wood from that tree.

Anyway, that is a very nice bowl.:)

I keep looking at this thing. Wow. What part of the tree did this come from? I have a large cotton wood right beside my shop. If this thing gets blown down like some of my oaks did, I'll know what to look for. Thanks:)

Ron,
Like everyone else has said, incredible piece of cottonwood. I have seen it before that had quilting but nowhere near the quilting in that piece.
Mike Mahoney did a presentation at my local woodturning club meeting last year using a piece of quilted cottonwood. He told us that by looking at the bark he can usually tell if the wood will be quilted or not. I would make a visual note in the back of your head on what the bark on that piece looked like, because its a keeper

Unbelievable quilt, the bowl appears to be on fire. Great form and awesome photography!

Wow, that quilting is incredible - truly eye candy if I've ever seen any... and Cottonwood you say!!! For the pain and frustration of what that wood does to me, I'd put up with it if I knew that was the reward waiting inside for me :)
