These are some gears I cut on my laser. Its for a clock I am protytyping that will eventualy be cut on the cnc.

This gear train gives my a 1-32 ratio. By adding two more gears a 32 and a 60 takes it to 1-60.

Nice work Michael.

What material are the gears cut from ?

Paul.

looks like a pretty big clock :D

The prototype material is just 1/8 hardboard. The coated stuff. Its only to test the gear ratios and positions. The actual gears wont be overlapped like this as they will go up and down the length of the clock. Its going to be very kenetic.

The second gear train will be shaped like this.

The main building material will be 5/8 baltic birch and will look like this.

good job but on the 5/8 baltic birch how did you not get burned edges

He most likely cut it with his CNC machine.

Yep the baltic birch was on the CNC.

Very nice!

Are you drawing the gears from scratch?

I've been thinking about producing a clock for my office space. I've got a few plans lined up (not starting from scratch...) and I'm working on alternate layouts for the gears. It's slow going; good thing there's no real deadline involved!

Jay,

Gearotic Motion can create just about any gear for laser, mill and CNC cutting. And it is not an expensive piece of kit.

That's definately an interesting looking porogram, but I can't seem to get it to load on my laptop (running Windows 7).

I've used a couple of other gear generators in the past with pretty good success, but none of those programs would create the eliptical gears.
