Is it spalted yet?

Can someone tell me when you are looking at a Pecan tree trunk, limb or whatever how can tell if the spalting has started yet? :confused:

Almost impossible to tell if it is standing. If down and blocked, chainsaw off about 1/4" to 1" on each end. This will give you a clean end to look at. Look at the ends of the block, if you see black lines, it is spalted. It is important to see the black on both ends as early spalting may only go in a few inches. Be sure to check for some very light soft areas that show rot. If it has too much rot, it isn't worth dealing with as it will fall apart in the lathe.
