Larry, you have the patience of Job!! Really nice work, and I like that trestle section. And, you did good with the form - not always the case in segmented pieces from what I have seen.

Congrats on the placement!

I can only shake my head when looking at segmented work like this.:)
The layout and glueup must take so long I would be scared to get anywhere near it with a gouge. Great work!

I enjoy your videos and this one would be very interesting to get a glimpse of.

Now just display it on a little turntable and you'll have people mesmerized for hours watching the train go round and round.....

Absolutely stunning. Good job.

Amazing stuff!

Such a gorgeous execution of a great concept. Who doesn't love trains? No surprise you won an award with it, this is by far the nicest segmented work taken to a high design level. You have given us all something to aspire to, thanks!

That is a fantastic piece! Congratulations on the first place win, certainly well deserved. Tight glue joints, and the 3d rendering in wood is impressive. You deserve the accolades, and I hope to see more!

Could we trouble you for dimensions, finish, inside treatment, tutorial, or any of that?

Thanks for posting!

Larry,
Neat piece. I love all the little details, especially the 3d effect on the wheels, and the cool wood inside the tunnel.

Nice to see you posting some new work.

It is 8.75" wide by 6.75" tall.

Finish is 8 coats of shellac, wet sanded, buffed and waxed.
The finish is the same on the interior. I first attached the top with carpet tape so I could shape the exterior, then removed the top, turned and finished the top and bottom interiors.
Once the two halves were glued together, I just needed to fine tune the exterior and interior form at the glue joint.
I left a little width in the feature ring at the glue joint and turned it to 1/4" after the final glue up. I attached pics of the full size template I used to create the feature ring segments as well as interior shots prior to glue up.
The feature ring was created using marquetry on a bandsaw with a 3/16" blade, and disk sander techniques to create the design. The Feature ring has 265 pieces and took about three days to build. The rest was cut and assembled in a day. The veneer layers were made as 3/4" thick rings and sliced on a bandsaw.

A couple people at the competition last night were surprised to see the train on the interior when they peeked inside. Planning the design and building the feature ring segments to accommodate for the effects of miters and form as been a learning experience.
I love the way the trestle worked and the green color of the poplar.
I have to keep a note pad near by to write down ideas for new scenes.
By the time I finish the feature ring I am tired. When the turning is finished, I am energized.
Thank you for all your comments!
