I have recently turned a bottle stopper (walnut burl) and used BLO and garnet shellac to bring out the color and figure of the wood (which it did wonderfully.)

However, given shellac's dislike of alcohol, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a "final" coat?

Light spray of lacquer?

A coat or two of CA (like a pen)?

Other?

Thanks for any help.

Jeff,

My favorite finish for bottlestoppers is....BLO....frictioned........dewaxed shellac....frictioned......Deft brushing lacquer......................frictioned.

When the bottlestopper comes off the lathe it's finished....but.....yes sprayed lacquer would do fine too.

Thank you Ken. I'm with you on the first two parts . . . guess I might as well just keep going and friction polish the rest.

you aren't going to soak the stopper in wine. Shellac will be fine as a top coat.
