These are both turned from the same log of mesquite
The "open wave" bowl is about 10 x 4. I like the stability of the mesquite but had to work carefully around the natural cracks.
The "natural edge" bowl is about 7 x 3 and from the remaining part of the log - turned upside down from the first one.

I like them both, but the open wave one is nice to the extreme scale. I have a chunk of mesquite that a friend gave me. Your bowls make me want to go out and try and bring it to life.

That open wave is obviously awesome, but I gotta give props to that NE bowl. The form just really speaks to me. Just so organic and natural without crossing the rustic line. Perfect.

I like 'em both. Gotta love mesquite. I'm gonna file that open wave bowl idea away for future reference.

The NE is nice but the wave bowl makes it look pretty plain. Great work!

I would love to here the details of how you opened up those strips so cleanly.

Nice work there! and really nice pieces of mesquite. Excellent job on the open wave piece, and if you tire of it, it would look great on my fireplace mantle:cool:.

Nice work John! If I recall, you (or someone else?) promised us a tutorial on wavy bowls with two woods, way back.

If I had that NE bowl in my booth for the show I am doing this weekend, it would sell in seconds, for a ridiculous price.

Excellent work, and while I certainly see the attraction with the NE, the wave bowl just has a lot more to it - my pick!!

I'm guessing with a bandsaw but it may be a trade secret.

I'm guessing with a bandsaw but it may be a trade secret.
Would it be possible to do that with a larger scroll saw?

Hi Everyone,
I really appreciate the kind comments on my work, and the interest in the techniques behind the "wave" design.
I am always impressed with the woodturning communities willingness to assist others and share ideas, and while I have every intention of eventually doing that with my wave design, I have been advised by a few people whose opinion I respect, that I should not share it yet.
As an emerging artist, the fact that I have developed a signature design will hopefully lead to opening doors and creating opportunities, and I would like to spend a little more time developing and establishing the "wave" before sharing it with others.

The NE form has a great calming shape and flow to it. Great contrast between the two forms - both coming from the same chunk of wood.
